Stanier Institute Opinion Paper Project

The Stanier Institute/Institut Stanier is a scientifically-minded group committed to development of the public health sciences. The Stanier Institute/Institut Stanier, in partnership with the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (www.ciphi.ca), invites practicing certified Public Health Inspectors to submit a feature opinion paper – in English or French – offering ideas and suggestions that address any issue applied to the present day activities of Public Health Inspectors. Any member in good standing of CIPHI is eligible to enter. The Stanier Institute awards $1000 for the opinion paper assessed to be the most interesting and original submission.

The Canadian Institute Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI) and the Stanier Institute would like to thank the 20 plus CIPHI members that participated in the review process for 2010.

2010 Winner

The 2010 Stanier Institute Opinion Paper Contest Winners are Jason MacDonald and Michael Sidra from Edmonton, Alberta, for their paper entitled "Finished Product Inspections Will Not Prevent Hazards: Why the EHO must embrace HACCP to succeed in performing meaningful inspections of Personal Service Settings". The paper is posted on the CIPHI website in the Member Service Centre.

Jason and Michael have informed us that they are planning to use the award money for a fundraising project they are supporting in Nicaragua. Here is a message from them:

Hello all – As environmental public health professionals we all take pride in the work we do each and every day to protect public health within our respective work areas. However, if you are like us, you are always wondering what else you can do to support environmental public health around the world in areas where it is desperately needed. Well, here is a chance to do just that!

100% of the 2010 Stanier Institute Opinion Paper Award ($1000) will be donated to support Clinica Verde in rural Nicaragua. Clínica Verde, meaning "Green Clinic", is a nonprofit charitable organization formed to build and assist sustainable health clinics that improve maternal and infant healthcare in Nicaragua. These clinics will offer public health education programs, including food safety and nutrition information, to women in the area. What separates Clinica Verde from other charitable organizations is that this is not a onetime effort – it is the building of sustainable, locally operated health system.

Of course accomplishing all this is no small feat!

We believe that the 1500 CIPHI members and their close professional and personal associates can raise at least 10 times the amount of the Stanier Opinion award for a total of 10,000 dollars.
