Dear CIPHI members,

At our annual general meeting on June 21st, 2010, we acclaimed three returning councillors to the Executive and acclaimed Cameron Weighill to the President-Elect position. Cameron’s transition has left a one year vacancy on the executive for the Partnership and Liaison councillor position.

Following the AGM, and as permissible under the Ontario Branch bylaws, the CIPHI Ontario Branch Executive extended an official invitation to a past executive member to help fill the vacancy. A motion was presented and passed by the Ontario Branch Executive Council to appoint the individual to the executive for the 2010-11 operational period.

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Cathy Egan to the executive council for 2010-11. Cathy will immediately assume the role of Partnership and Liaison councillor.

MOHLTC to Fund 25 Student PHI Positions

Financial Support for Practicum Field Placements for Student Public Health Inspectors

To assist health units in providing field placement practicum positions for public health inspector students, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care is offering 100% one-time funding to health units to create 25 field placement positions in their organizations.

These practicum placements must be a minimum of 12 weeks duration, and be completed by March 31, 2011. The host health unit must meet the requirements set out by the Board of Certification of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI). Details of the requirements can be found in the BOC Practicum Guide (2010).

OBEC Welcomes New Branch President

The Ontario Branch Executive is pleased to announce the appointment of Ken Diplock as the new President of the Ontario Branch. Ken has served the Ontario Branch, first as a Councillor then as as President-Elect, with boundless energy and enthusiasm, and we expect this will continue during his two year term as President.

Active with the the National Executive Council already, through working with other members across the country to launch the fledgling Member Service Centre, Ken will now formally represent the OBEC on the NEC during his term as Ontario Branch President.

Peter Heywood now holds the post of Past President and will continue to provide us with his insight and leadership, helping us to stay the exciting course we have charted over the last few years.

Mike Duncan, after 12 years continuous participation on the OBEC is now able to formally step down from the position of Past President, which he held for the past 4 years. It is doubtful that we have heard the last from Mike however, as he will surely be called upon from time to time for words of wisdom.

Cameron Weighill has been appointed to the role of President-Elect. He too has been an active participant on the OBEC for a number of years. Under the leadership of Ken, with Cameron's enthusiastic assistance, the Ontario Branch of CIPHI can look forward to new initiatives, active growth in a number of directions and exciting opportunities for us all.

Thank you Mike and Peter for your dedication, wisdom and vision over the years. Your legacy is secure in the hands of Ken Diplock and Cameron Weighill, and the rest of the CIPHI Ontario Branch Executive Committee.
